Overwatch 2 can feel laggy for two very different reasons. Network lag makes enemies jump around and abilities fire late. Performance stutter makes the whole game choppy even when the connection is fine.
These steps apply to Overwatch 2 on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Does this affect you?
Use this if aiming feels delayed, shots do not register, characters teleport, or fights become choppy. First decide whether the issue is your connection to Blizzard or the frame rate on your device.
Fix connection lag and rubber-banding
Use these steps when enemies snap around, abilities trigger late, or hit registration feels unreliable.
- Enable Options > Video > Display Performance Stats so you can watch ping during a match.
- Treat ping under about 60 ms as normal and spikes over 100 to 150 ms as a likely problem.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for about one minute, then wait for it to reconnect fully.
- Use wired Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if possible.
- Pause downloads, game updates, streams, and cloud backups on your network while playing.
- Disable VPN software because it adds another route between you and Blizzard’s servers.
- Check Blizzard’s Overwatch 2 server status before assuming the issue is local.
If ping stays low but the game still has short bursts of weird movement, packet loss or Wi-Fi jitter may be the real issue. A wired test is the quickest way to prove that.
Fix frame rate stuttering
Use these steps when the game is choppy in the practice range or menus even though the connection is healthy.
- On PC, open Options > Video > Graphics Quality.
- Lower Texture Quality, Local Fog Detail, and Shadow Detail first.
- Update the graphics driver through NVIDIA software or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- On console, make sure a system update, game download, or another app is not running heavily in the background.
- On PC, open Battle.net, select Overwatch 2, then use Options > Scan and Repair.
- Close overlays and capture tools you do not need, including chat overlays, FPS overlays, and recording software.
- Check whether the PC or console is overheating during longer sessions.
If stutter appears mainly when a new hero, map, or effect loads for the first time after an update, it may be shader compilation. That usually improves after a few matches as the game caches the work.
How to tell which problem you have
High ping, packet loss, delayed abilities, and teleporting enemies point to network lag. Lowering graphics settings will not fix that.
Choppy motion in solo areas, frame drops during team fights, and worse performance the longer you play point to device performance, drivers, overlays, or heat.
