OBS Game Capture works by hooking directly into a game and reading the frames the game renders. When that hook fails, OBS often shows a black rectangle even though the game is running normally.
These steps apply to OBS Studio on Windows when capturing games running on the same PC.

Turn off Fullscreen Optimizations for the game
Windows Fullscreen Optimizations can change how a fullscreen game presents frames, and that can block OBS from hooking into it correctly.
- Find the game’s main executable file. From a shortcut, right-click and choose Open file location, or browse to the game install folder.
- Right-click the .exe file and choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Check Disable fullscreen optimizations.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Restart the game.
- In OBS, remove the old Game Capture source and add a new one for that game or for any fullscreen application.
Recreating the capture source matters because OBS may keep trying to use an old hook state even after the game setting changes.
Update your graphics driver and OBS itself
A game update, driver bug, or old OBS build can break capture for a specific rendering method.
- Update NVIDIA drivers through the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience, or update AMD drivers through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Restart Windows after installing the driver.
- Open OBS and check for updates, or download the current installer from the official OBS website.
- Install OBS over the current copy so your scenes and settings remain in place.
- Restart OBS and the game, then test Game Capture again.
Driver and OBS updates should be tested together because either side can be the part that no longer understands how the game is rendering.
Run OBS as Administrator, or switch to Display Capture
If the first fixes do not work, test permissions and then use a universal capture fallback.
- Right-click OBS and choose Run as administrator.
- If the game also runs as administrator, keep OBS at the same permission level.
- If Game Capture remains black, remove it and add a Display Capture source.
- Choose the monitor where the game is shown.
- Record a short test clip to confirm the image appears.
Display Capture is less private and less efficient because it records the whole monitor, including other windows, but it works with far more games while you keep troubleshooting Game Capture.
Other causes to check
Try Borderless Windowed or Windowed Fullscreen inside the game’s video settings. Some games capture more reliably that way than in exclusive fullscreen.
Some competitive games with deep anti-cheat protection intentionally block programs from hooking into the rendering process. If only one protected game stays black after every OBS fix, check that game’s support notes and community reports.
On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure OBS and the game run on the same GPU. Set both apps to High performance in Windows graphics settings or in the NVIDIA or AMD control panel.
