Minecraft failing to launch is usually caused by an outdated Java runtime, old graphics driver, stuck launcher process, corrupted launcher files, mods, antivirus blocking, or Microsoft authentication trouble. Your worlds are usually safe if you avoid deleting the saves folder.
These steps apply to Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition on Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use this if clicking Play does nothing, the launcher freezes, or Minecraft flashes open and closes back to desktop.
Update Java and graphics drivers
- For Java Edition, open Minecraft Launcher > Installations.
- Edit your profile and check Java Executable.
- Use the bundled Java runtime or a current system Java version, not a very old install.
- Update graphics drivers directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Restart the PC after installing drivers.
- For Bedrock Edition, open Settings > Apps > Minecraft and use Terminate to close stuck background processes.
If the game opens after these steps, the old Java or graphics driver was likely the cause.
Reset launcher files
- Close Minecraft Launcher completely.
- Open Task Manager and end Minecraft or Java processes still running.
- For Java Edition, open %appdata%.minecraft.
- Rename the versions folder to versions_old.
- Reopen the launcher so it downloads fresh game files.
- For Bedrock, open Settings > Apps > Minecraft > Advanced options and try Repair, then Reset if needed.
Renaming versions does not remove your saves folder. Still, copy saves somewhere safe before major resets.
Mods, antivirus, and account checks
If you use Forge, Fabric, or another mod loader, try launching a vanilla profile. If vanilla works, the real cause is probably a mod or outdated loader.
Check antivirus quarantine or blocked items if Minecraft or Java was flagged after an update. Add an exception only if you are sure the files are legitimate.
If launch fails at login or authentication, check Minecraft or Microsoft service status before reinstalling. A service outage can block sign-in even when your PC is fine.
