A slow game download is often caused by launcher server selection, regional congestion, bandwidth limits, other devices using the connection, Wi-Fi limits, VPN overhead, or ISP congestion rather than the game itself.
These steps apply to Steam, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net downloads on Windows PCs over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Use this if a game download crawls far below what your internet plan should allow.
Fix region and launcher settings
- In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Change Download Region to a nearby region, or try another nearby region if the current one is congested.
- Pause other queued Steam downloads.
- In Epic Games Store, check Settings for download limits or pause and resume to reconnect.
- In Battle.net, open Settings > Game Install/Update and check background download limits.
- Restart the launcher after region or bandwidth changes.
Launchers often keep using the old server for an active download until you restart the app or restart the download.
Clear bandwidth competition
- Pause OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, and other sync apps.
- Stop other game launchers from downloading updates.
- Check phones, tablets, consoles, and TVs for large updates or streaming.
- Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when possible.
- If using Wi-Fi, move closer to the router or use 5GHz at short range.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for about one minute.
A strong internet plan can still feel slow if the local network is crowded or the PC is on weak Wi-Fi.
Check VPN, ISP, and expectations
Turn off VPN during large downloads unless you need it. VPN routing and encryption usually reduce speed.
If downloads are consistently slow during evening peak hours, run a speed test and compare it with your plan. ISP traffic shaping or neighborhood congestion may be involved.
Remember that internet speeds are usually advertised in megabits per second, while file sizes are shown in gigabytes. A 100 GB game can still take around 25 to 30 minutes on a very fast 500 Mbps connection under ideal conditions.
