Roku streaming players, especially small sticks, can run warm because they are sealed devices with no fan. Warm is normal. Hot enough that you do not want to hold it, or heat paired with restarts and freezes, needs attention.
These steps apply to Roku Streaming Stick, Roku Express, Roku Ultra, and Roku TVs running Roku OS.

Use this if the Roku feels very hot, shows overheating warnings, freezes, restarts, or shuts down during streaming.
Improve airflow
- Unplug the Roku from HDMI and power.
- If it is a Streaming Stick plugged directly behind the TV, use an HDMI extender.
- Keep the Roku out of closed cabinets and cable bundles.
- Keep it away from direct sunlight and other hot electronics.
- Reconnect it and check temperature again after 10 to 15 minutes.
Moving a stick a few inches away from the TV back panel can make a noticeable difference because the TV itself radiates heat and blocks airflow.
Restart the Roku
- Go to Settings > System > Power > System restart on a streaming player.
- On a Roku TV, use Settings > System > System restart.
- Confirm and wait for reboot.
- If frozen, unplug power for 30 seconds.
A restart clears background processes that can push the processor harder and create extra heat.
Use proper power
Powering a Roku stick from the TV’s USB port can cause instability. Use the wall adapter that came with the Roku, plugged into a wall outlet or powered surge protector.
An underpowered device may restart, freeze, or run hotter than expected because power delivery is inconsistent.
When heat means end of life
If the device remains hot and keeps restarting after airflow, restart, and proper power fixes, it may be aging or failing. Roku sticks are inexpensive enough that replacing an older, repeatedly overheating unit is often more sensible than continuing to troubleshoot it.
