Roku screen mirroring depends on both devices discovering each other over Wi-Fi or a compatible mirroring protocol. If the Roku is set to reject mirroring, on a different network, or outdated, your phone or laptop may never see it.
These steps apply to Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices mirroring from Android phones, Windows laptops, iPhones, and iPads.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the Roku does not appear in the mirroring list, the connection fails, or mirroring starts and drops quickly.
Enable screen mirroring on Roku
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Go to Settings > System > Screen mirroring.
- Set Screen mirroring mode to Prompt or Always allow.
- Make sure it is not set to Never allow.
- Return to the Home screen and try again from the phone or computer.
On many Roku devices, this setting is the reason mirroring fails before it starts.
Use the same Wi-Fi network
- On Roku, open Settings > Network and note the network name.
- On the phone or laptop, open Wi-Fi settings.
- Connect to the exact same network.
- Avoid guest networks, cellular data, and separate router bands that cannot see each other.
- Restart mirroring.
Screen mirroring usually fails when one device is on a guest network and the other is on the main network.
Start mirroring from the right place
- Android: open Quick Settings and choose Screen Cast, Smart View, or Cast.
- Windows 10/11: press Windows key + K, or use Settings > System > Display > Connect to a wireless display.
- iPhone/iPad: open Control Center > Screen Mirroring and choose the Roku if your model supports AirPlay.
Older Roku models may not support AirPlay. If iPhone mirroring is missing, check Roku’s AirPlay-compatible device list.
Fix drops and lag
Full mirroring uses more bandwidth than casting one app. If you only need YouTube or Spotify, use that app’s Cast or AirPlay button instead.
Move closer to the router, use 5GHz Wi-Fi when stable, restart the Roku, toggle Wi-Fi off/on on the phone or laptop, and update Roku from Settings > System > System update. OS updates often fix compatibility problems after Android or Windows changes.
