Roku problems can be local to your device or part of a wider outage. The home screen may freeze, apps may crash, the remote may lag, or everything may feel slow.
Start with the least disruptive fixes: restart, remote batteries and pairing, software update, then factory reset only if needed.

Use this if a Roku streaming player, Roku stick, or Roku TV is acting up and you are not sure whether the cause is the device, the remote, an app, or Roku’s service.
Restart the Roku
- Press Home on the remote.
- Go to Settings > System > System Restart.
- Select Restart.
- If the remote does not respond, unplug the Roku from power.
- Wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and give it a minute to reboot.
A restart clears memory that builds up after weeks of use and fixes many slow-menu and freezing complaints.
Check the remote
- Replace the remote batteries.
- Remove the batteries for 10 seconds and reinstall them.
- Look for a pairing screen on the TV.
- If the remote has a pairing button inside the battery compartment, hold it for about three seconds.
- Use the Roku mobile app on the same Wi-Fi network as a temporary remote.
If the Roku responds to the phone app but not the physical remote, the remote is the problem.
Update or factory reset as a last resort
- Go to Settings > System > System Update > Check Now.
- Install any available update.
- If problems continue, go to Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset.
- Enter the confirmation code and set up Roku again from scratch.
Factory reset erases channels, Wi-Fi, and app sign-ins, so save it for persistent problems or handoff preparation.
Check outages, heat, and storage
Before deep troubleshooting, check status.roku.com or an outage tracker. If one channel fails while the Roku home screen works, that service may be down instead of Roku.
Give Roku sticks and boxes airflow. Devices hidden in cabinets or behind hot TVs can freeze or restart from heat. On lower-storage models, remove channels you do not use if app launches are slow.
