When a Roku is truly frozen, the home screen, app, or Roku logo stops responding and the remote does nothing. Pressing Home does not help because the software that handles the remote is stuck too.
The reliable fix is a forced restart. These steps apply to Roku TVs and Roku streaming devices such as Roku Express, Streaming Stick, and Ultra.
Does this affect you?
Use this if your Roku is stuck on one screen, will not scroll, will not exit an app, or ignores the remote completely. If the Roku is only slow but still responds, try a normal restart from Settings first.
Unplug power for 30 seconds
- Unplug the power cable. For a Roku TV, unplug the TV from the wall. For a Roku streaming device, unplug the Roku power cable.
- Wait a full 30 seconds.
- Plug it back in.
- Wait for the Roku logo or home screen to appear.
- Press Home once to test the remote.
Do not just remove the HDMI plug or quickly tap the power. Waiting the full 30 seconds gives the device time to clear the frozen memory state.
Try the Roku mobile app
The Roku app helps when the physical remote is the problem rather than the Roku itself.
- Install or open the Roku app on iPhone or Android.
- Make sure the phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Roku.
- Open Devices and select your Roku.
- Tap Remote and try pressing Home.
- If available for your model, use the app’s restart option from the device controls.
If the mobile app works but the physical remote does not, replace the remote batteries or re-pair the remote instead of factory resetting the Roku.
If Roku freezes repeatedly
Once the Roku responds again, go to Settings > System > System update > Check now. Updates can fix freezing bugs tied to Roku OS versions or specific channels.
For streaming sticks, check heat and ventilation. A stick squeezed behind a wall-mounted TV can overheat. Use the HDMI extender cable to move it into open air.
On lower-storage models, too many installed channels can make the interface sluggish. Check Settings > System > About and remove channels you no longer use.
If the Roku freezes multiple times a week even after updates and a factory reset from Settings > System > Advanced system settings > Factory reset, the storage may be failing. Replacing the device is often more practical than repair.
