A WhatsApp verification code is meant for your phone and WhatsApp only. If someone asks you to send them the six-digit code, they are likely trying to take over your account.

What is happening and how to protect your account
The code itself is not the danger. Sharing it is.
- Never send your WhatsApp verification code to anyone, including friends, family, strangers, or someone claiming to be WhatsApp support.
- An unexpected code usually means someone entered your phone number into WhatsApp on another device. Without the code, they cannot complete the takeover.
- Turn on two-step verification in WhatsApp under Settings > Account > Two-step verification > Enable, then create a PIN.
- Be alert when a message asking for the code arrives right after the code text. The sender may be a compromised contact or a stranger pretending to know you.
- Ignore any message claiming WhatsApp Support needs the code. WhatsApp does not ask users to forward verification codes through chat.
What to do if you already sent the code
Act quickly because the scammer may register your number within minutes.
- Open WhatsApp on your phone and try to register your number again through the normal verification process.
- Enter the new verification code sent to your phone. This can kick out the device that used the old code.
- If the scammer enabled two-step verification with a PIN you do not know, follow WhatsApp’s account recovery process and waiting period.
- Warn contacts through another channel, such as a phone call, text, or different messaging app, because the scammer may message them next.
- Once you regain access, turn on two-step verification immediately.
- Report the compromise through WhatsApp Settings > Help > Contact Us.

A request from a friend’s account is not automatically safe. Call them outside WhatsApp before responding to any code or money request.
The rule applies everywhere
Google, Facebook, banks, and many other services use verification codes too. A code is for you to enter into the service, never to send to another person.
