The one ring scam is designed to make you call back. A number rings once, hangs up, and leaves curiosity or annoyance to do the rest. If you ignore the missed call, the scam fails.

Use this for iPhone, Android, or landline missed calls from unfamiliar numbers, especially calls that rang once or stopped before you could answer.
Do not call back
Calling back is the entire trick.
- Do not return calls from unfamiliar numbers just because they rang once.
- The callback may connect to a premium-rate international number that charges high per-minute fees.
- Scammers may use hold music, fake menus, or long greetings to keep you connected.
- Check unfamiliar area codes before assuming they are local. Some international numbers look like normal U.S.-style numbers.
- If the missed call might be legitimate, look up the business or person through an official number and call that instead.
- Block the number from your recent calls list. On iPhone, tap the info icon and choose Block this Caller. On Android, use the Recents menu and choose Block.
If you already called back
Check for charges and contact your carrier.
- Review your phone bill for international or premium-rate charges. They may appear later.
- Contact your phone carrier and explain that you returned a one-ring scam call. Ask about dispute options.
- Turn on your carrier’s free spam-call blocking tools if available.
- Register your number at donotcall.gov to reduce legitimate telemarketing, while understanding it will not stop illegal scam calls.
