WhatsApp Verification Code Not Arriving: How to Fix It

WhatsApp asks for a six-digit code when registering a phone number, reinstalling the app, or moving to a new phone. If the code never arrives or is rejected, the cause is usually number formatting, SMS delivery, expiration, or confusion with a two-step PIN.

Does this affect you?

Use this for WhatsApp on iPhone or Android when registering a number for the first time, reinstalling WhatsApp, or switching phones.

If the code never arrives

Check delivery basics before requesting repeatedly.

  1. Confirm the country code and phone number are correct on the registration screen.
  2. Make sure the phone has cellular signal and Airplane Mode is off.
  3. Wait a few minutes because carrier delivery delays are common.
  4. Use the Call me option when WhatsApp makes it available. The automated call reads the code aloud.
  5. Check whether the carrier blocks short-code texts, especially on prepaid or business plans.
  6. Temporarily disable call-blocking, SMS filtering, or spam-filter apps and try again.

If WhatsApp says the code is wrong

Use the newest code and make sure you are not entering a PIN instead.

  1. Enter the six-digit code exactly as received, with no extra spaces.
  2. Use the newest text message, not an older code in the thread.
  3. If several minutes passed, request a fresh code instead of retyping the old one.
  4. If WhatsApp asks for a PIN, that is Two-Step Verification, not the SMS code.
  5. If you forgot the PIN, tap Forgotten PIN and reset by email if you added a recovery email.
  6. After the waiting period or email reset, complete registration with the SMS code.

More control

Add a recovery email for the PIN

Settings > Account > Two-step verification lets you add an email address. It is the shortcut around the long wait if you forget the PIN.

Save the PIN

A two-step PIN is easy to forget because you rarely type it. Keep it in a password manager.

Prepare before switching phones

Before moving a SIM or number, make sure SMS and calls are not blocked by carrier settings or filtering apps.

Avoid rapid repeated registration

Registering the same number many times in a short period can trigger extra WhatsApp delays. If you are switching phones once, wait out the timer instead of hammering requests.
