A recovery email is a separate inbox an account can use when your normal sign-in path fails. It is not just another contact detail; it may be the difference between a quick reset and a permanent lockout.

What a recovery email does
It exists for the moment when your main way in does not work.
- During password reset or account recovery, the service can send a code or link to the recovery email.
- It can receive security alerts about new sign-ins, password changes, or recovery attempts.
- For email accounts, it solves the circular problem of needing email access to reset the email password.
- It works separately from a recovery phone number, and having both creates two different fallback paths.
What makes a good recovery email
A stale or shared inbox can defeat the whole purpose.
- Use an address from a different provider when possible, such as a non-Google recovery email for a Google account.
- Choose an inbox you still check and can access independently.
- Avoid old school, work, or college addresses you might lose later.
- Do not use a shared family inbox unless everyone with access should be able to receive recovery links.
- Update the recovery email whenever you change providers or stop using an address.

Confirm the address
Many services send a confirmation link before a recovery email becomes active. Do not assume it works until you click the confirmation.
