An X account lock is usually meant to be temporary. X detected something unusual, asked you to prove you own the account, and will often restore access once verification succeeds.
Does this affect you?
Use this for personal X accounts on the web or in the X app when login shows a locked-account message, requests email or phone verification, or asks you to prove you are not automated. This is different from a full suspension.
Verify your identity to unlock it
Most temporary locks clear within minutes once the verification step works.
- On the locked-account screen, select Start, Verify, or the equivalent button.
- Choose the phone number or email address on file if X offers a choice.
- Enter the verification code promptly. These codes usually expire within a few minutes.
- Complete the CAPTCHA if one appears. It is a normal part of the unlock flow.
- After verification, X may unlock the account immediately or show that review is still in progress. That usually clears within a few hours.
If you cannot reach the phone or email
Use this when the verification code has nowhere useful to go.
- On the verification page, look for Try another way, Need help, or a similar link.
- If you can still access account settings, update the stale email or phone number under Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information.
- If you cannot get that far, submit a request through the X Help Center contact form.
- Include your username and ownership details, such as the account creation period, previous email address, old phone number, or examples of posts only you would know.
- Wait for manual review. This can take a day or more than a week depending on support volume, and public replies to X support do not speed it up.
More control
Know what triggers locks
Common triggers include VPN logins from a new region, travel, several failed password attempts, repeated posting of the same link, or a sudden spike in follows. These can happen even when you did not intentionally violate rules.
Update recovery details immediately
Outdated phone numbers and abandoned email addresses are the reason many X locks drag on. Check Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information as soon as access returns.
Use two-factor authentication
Under Settings and privacy > Security and account access > Security, enable two-factor authentication. An authenticator app is generally more reliable than SMS and gives X stronger confidence during future logins.
Return from VPN or travel gradually
If the lock followed a VPN or international login, use your normal network for a few days after unlocking. That reduces the chance of repeated false alarms.
