Fix a rejected document photo or selfie
Most failures come from image quality or device permissions.
- Photograph the ID in bright, even light.
- Show all four corners of the license, state ID, passport, or other document.
- Use a plain background and avoid glare or reflective surfaces.
- For the selfie, remove hats, sunglasses, and anything covering the face.
- Center your face and use good lighting.
- If the camera or microphone is blocked, allow permissions in the browser address bar or device settings.
- Close other apps that may be using the camera.
- Try a different device if the phone or computer keeps failing.
When self-service verification keeps failing
Use the live-agent fallback when automatic checks cannot match you.
- If ID.me offers a video call with a verification agent, choose that option.
- Have the physical photo ID ready.
- Be prepared to show the document on camera and answer identity questions.
- If the issue is a name mismatch with Social Security Administration records, such as EC 6001, resolve that mismatch with SSA before ID.me can verify you.
- After ID.me verifies you, return to IRS.gov and choose Sign in with ID.me again.
