Gmail recovery is broader than a simple password reset. Use it when you cannot remember the password, do not know the exact address, lost access to recovery methods, or suspect someone changed account details.

Use Google’s Account Recovery tool
This is the official starting point for lost access.
- Go to g.co/recover in a browser.
- Enter the email address, phone number, or username you used for the account.
- If you do not remember the address, choose Forgot email or Try another way when available.
- Enter the last password you remember, even if it is old. Google uses it as an ownership signal.
- Use any recovery method still available, such as recovery phone, recovery email, backup codes, or a prompt on a trusted device.
- Answer account questions as accurately as possible, including old passwords, approximate creation dates, or familiar account details.
- Once verified, set a new password immediately.
Use the trusted-device shortcut
A device that is still signed in can make recovery much easier.
- Check old phones, tablets, work browsers, family computers, and other places where Gmail may still be signed in.
- If you find one, open myaccount.google.com > Security.
- Update recovery phone and recovery email to current methods.
- Change the password while signed in.
- Use the new password on your main device.
More control
Recover from a familiar place
Start recovery from a device, browser, city, and Wi-Fi network you have used before. Unfamiliar locations can trigger extra checks or waiting periods.
Use backup codes if you have them
If 2-Step Verification backup codes were saved earlier, one code can confirm your identity quickly. Check your password manager or printed records.
There is no support phone shortcut
Google does not offer a customer support phone line that can override account recovery for normal Gmail accounts. If you hit try again later, wait and retry with accurate answers from a familiar device.
Secure the account after access returns
Review Recent security activity, update recovery phone and email, turn on 2-Step Verification, and remove unfamiliar devices or app access.
