Facebook offers both deactivation and deletion. Deactivation hides the account until you log back in. Deletion removes the account after a grace period and becomes permanent once that window closes.
Does this affect you?
Use this for personal Facebook accounts on the website, iPhone app, or Android app when you want permanent deletion instead of a temporary break.
Permanently delete your account
Use Accounts Center for the official deletion flow.
- On Facebook, open Settings & privacy > Settings.
- Go to Accounts Center.
- Open Personal details.
- Choose Account ownership and control.
- Select Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose the Facebook account and select Delete account.
- Follow the prompts and confirm with your password.
- Do not log back in during the grace period if you want deletion to finish.
More control
Download your information first
Open Accounts Center > Your information and permissions > Download your information before deleting. Request photos, posts, messages, and other account data while you still can.
Deactivate if you are unsure
Deactivation hides the account but keeps everything saved. Logging back in restores it. Use that option if you may return later.
Check Messenger and connected apps
Some Messenger behavior may continue depending on how it is configured. Also replace Log in with Facebook on games, apps, and websites before deleting so you do not lose access elsewhere.
