Apple no longer treats iCloud as a separate account. Deleting an iCloud account means deleting the entire Apple ID, now also called Apple Account, and that affects far more than email or cloud storage.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you want to permanently delete the Apple ID used for iCloud, App Store, iMessage, Find My, Apple subscriptions, purchases, and Apple services.
Permanently delete your Apple ID
This removes the account across Apple services.
- Go to privacy.apple.com and sign in with the Apple ID you want to delete.
- Under Delete your account, choose Request to delete your account.
- Select a reason if Apple asks.
- Read the list of services, purchases, subscriptions, and data affected by deletion.
- Download a copy of your data if you need iCloud photos, files, contacts, or other records.
- Confirm the request and save any access code or confirmation Apple provides.
- Watch for Apple’s email confirmation. The request may have a short hold before it becomes final.
Just remove iCloud from one device
Use this if you only want to stop syncing a device.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap your name.
- Scroll down and tap Sign Out.
- Enter the Apple ID password if prompted.
- Choose which data to keep on the device.
- Confirm Sign Out.
- On Mac, use System Settings > your name > Sign Out and follow the same prompts.
More control
Back up before deletion
Download iCloud Photos, Drive documents, contacts, calendars, and any other data you want before the account is deleted. Once deletion is final, Apple support cannot restore it.
Review Family Sharing and subscriptions
If you organize Family Sharing, deletion can affect shared purchases and storage. Cancel subscriptions separately under Apple ID settings so billing is handled before closure.
Use the hold period carefully
During Apple’s short hold period, you may be able to cancel deletion by signing in or using Apple’s instructions. After final confirmation, there is no undo.
