A Gemini Gem is a custom version of Gemini with saved instructions for a specific purpose. Instead of repeating your role, tone, and task every time, you create a Gem once and reopen it when needed.

Use this for the Gemini app or gemini.google.com with personal Google accounts or Workspace accounts where Gemini is enabled.
What Gems actually do
Gems are Gemini with pre-set instructions, not a separate model.
- Open the Gemini app or website and look for Gems in the side menu.
- Google provides ready-made Gems such as Writing Editor, Coding Partner, and Learning Coach.
- Opening a Gem starts a new chat with that role already applied.
- Each new chat in a Gem still starts fresh unless you continue the same conversation.
- You can build your own Gems for recurring tasks such as meal planning, interview practice, studying, or writing in a specific style.
Create your own Gem
Setup usually takes only a few minutes.
- Open the Gems section.
- Select New Gem or the plus icon.
- Give it a clear name.
- Write instructions describing what it should do and how it should respond.
- Upload reference files if your plan supports knowledge files for Gems.
- Click Save.
- Open the Gem from the list whenever you want to use it.
More control
Edit future behavior
Open a Gem and use the edit or pencil icon to change its name or instructions. Changes apply to future chats, not old conversations.
Workspace sharing may be available
Some Google Workspace plans let you share Gems with coworkers so a team uses the same instructions and workflow.
Gems do not bypass limits
A Gem uses the same Gemini account, model access, and usage limits as your regular chats. It does not unlock extra intelligence on its own.
Connections are separate
A Gem does not automatically read Gmail, Calendar, Drive, or other Google services unless those extensions or connections are enabled separately.
