Copilot problems usually come from service outages, account sign-in issues, outdated software, missing licenses, or work-account policy. First determine whether the issue is with Windows Copilot or Microsoft 365 Copilot inside Office apps.

Use this for Copilot in Windows 11, the taskbar or sidebar experience, and Copilot in Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, or Teams.
Fix Copilot in the Windows taskbar
Start here when the taskbar button will not open, opens blank, or stops responding.
- Check status.office365.com or an outage site for Microsoft-wide problems. If Copilot is down broadly, wait.
- Click the Copilot icon or press Win+C if supported on your build.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and confirm the Copilot toggle is on.
- If the panel opens blank, close it and try again after a few seconds.
- Sign out of your Microsoft account inside Copilot and sign back in.
- Install pending updates from Settings > Windows Update.
- Restart the PC if background processes appear stuck.
Fix Copilot inside Word, Excel, or Outlook
This is the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot experience and has different requirements.
- Confirm your account has a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Ask your administrator if it is a work or school account.
- Make sure the Office app is signed into the same account that has the license.
- Update the app from File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Close and reopen the document or email thread if Copilot reports a generic error.
- Ask IT whether Copilot is enabled for your user group if you are on a managed account.
More control
Copilot can be slow without being broken
Long prompts and peak demand can take 15 to 20 seconds or more. Give it a moment before assuming it failed.
Rollouts vary by region and language
Some Copilot features appear gradually. If a feature exists for someone else but not you, check region, language, account type, and rollout status.
Browser blockers can interfere
If you use Copilot in Edge or Outlook on the web, temporarily disable ad blockers, tracker blockers, VPN extensions, or script blockers that may prevent the AI panel from loading.
