How to Make a Custom GPT, Step by Step

A custom GPT is a tailored version of ChatGPT with your own instructions, name, description, conversation starters, optional knowledge files, and tool settings. You can build one without writing code, but creating GPTs requires an eligible paid plan.

Does this affect you?

Use this for ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise on the web when you want a specialized assistant for customer replies, internal documents, tutoring, writing style, or repeat workflows.

Build a GPT with the guided builder

The guided builder lets you describe the assistant in plain language.

  1. Go to chatgpt.com.
  2. Open your profile menu or GPT area and choose My GPTs or Explore GPTs.
  3. Click Create a GPT.
  4. In the Create tab, describe what you want, such as a GPT that writes friendly customer support replies in a casual tone.
  5. Answer the builder’s follow-up questions and approve or adjust the suggested name and profile picture.
  6. Test the GPT in the preview pane with realistic prompts.
  7. When the behavior looks right, click Create and choose who can access it.

Fine-tune it in the Configure tab

Use Configure when you want direct control.

  1. Open the Configure tab in the GPT editor.
  2. Fill in Name and Description.
  3. Write detailed Instructions covering tone, format, what to always do, and what to avoid.
  4. Add up to four Conversation starters.
  5. Under Knowledge, upload reference files such as PDFs, text documents, or spreadsheets.
  6. Under Capabilities, enable only the tools the GPT needs, such as Web Search, Image Generation, or Code Interpreter and Data Analysis.
  7. Click Create or Update when finished.

More control

Choose visibility carefully

Only me keeps the GPT private. Anyone with a link is effectively public to anyone who receives or forwards that URL. Publishing to the GPT Store makes it discoverable if your workspace allows it.

Review file and tool settings

If Code Interpreter or data analysis is enabled, users may be able to interact with uploaded files in ways you did not expect. Do not upload sensitive files unless you understand the workspace and capability settings.

A custom GPT is not a new model

It uses the same underlying ChatGPT models available to your account, with instructions and files layered on top. It can still make mistakes and should be reviewed for important work.

Using and creating are different

Creating GPTs requires a paid plan, but some published GPTs may be usable by free accounts depending on how OpenAI and the creator configure access.
