Closing the last Chrome window does not always stop Chrome completely. Chrome can keep background processes running, especially on Windows, so updates and certain setting changes may not take effect until the browser is truly restarted.

Use this for Chrome on Windows or Mac when a setting asks you to relaunch, Chrome seems to stay open in the background, or closing windows does not fix a browser problem.
Use Chrome built-in restart shortcut
This is the cleanest way to restart Chrome and restore tabs.
- Open a new Chrome tab.
- Type chrome://restart into the address bar.
- Press Enter.
- Wait while Chrome closes and reopens.
- Confirm your tabs return.
Chrome update relaunch buttons use the same idea: close Chrome fully, apply changes, and reopen.
Force-close Chrome manually
Use this when Chrome is frozen or chrome://restart does not work.
On Windows:
- Right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
- Find every Google Chrome process.
- Select each one and click End task.
- Open Chrome again from Start or a shortcut.
On Mac:
- Press Cmd+Option+Esc.
- Select Google Chrome.
- Click Force Quit.
- Open Chrome again from the Dock or Applications.
More control
Stop background apps
Open Settings > System and turn off Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed. After that, closing the last Chrome window is more likely to end Chrome completely.
Check for hidden windows
Chrome may look closed while a window is minimized or hidden. On Windows, check the taskbar. On Mac, a dot under the Dock icon means Chrome is still running.
Relaunch after updates
When Chrome shows an update arrow or colored menu indicator, choose Relaunch to apply the update instead of waiting for a later restart.
Frequent restarts point to another issue
If Chrome needs restarting several times a day, check extensions, memory usage, and Chrome updates. Restarting is a reset, not a long-term fix for a recurring problem.
