Chrome uses separate processes for tabs, extensions, and internal browser work. That design helps stability, but it also means memory use can climb quickly when many tabs and extensions stay open. If the whole computer slows down while Chrome uses several gigabytes of RAM, start by finding what is actually consuming memory.

Use this for Google Chrome on Windows or Mac when Task Manager, Activity Monitor, or Chrome Task Manager shows high memory use, the fan runs hard, or other apps become sluggish while Chrome is open.
Find what is using memory and turn on Memory Saver
Chrome includes both visibility tools and an automatic memory-saving feature.
- Open Chrome Task Manager. On Windows or ChromeOS, press Shift+Esc. On Mac, open the three-dot menu > More tools > Task Manager.
- Sort by memory and look for the largest tabs or extensions.
- Close tabs you do not need, especially video sites, web apps, auto-refreshing dashboards, and ad-heavy pages.
- Open Settings > Performance.
- Turn on Memory Saver.
- Add important sites under Always keep these sites active if you do not want them put to sleep.
Memory Saver frees memory from inactive tabs while keeping them visible. When you click one again, Chrome reloads it.
Check and disable heavy extensions
Extensions can keep running even when you are not actively using the site they relate to.
- Open chrome://extensions.
- Turn off extensions you rarely use.
- Check Chrome Task Manager again and compare memory use.
- If one extension is clearly responsible, remove it or replace it with a lighter alternative.
- Repeat this review every few months so old extensions do not pile up.
More control
Use tab groups without keeping everything active
Right-click a tab and choose Add tab to new group to organize related pages. Collapsing a group makes the tab bar cleaner, and Memory Saver can still free inactive tabs inside that group.
Try graphics acceleration carefully
Open Settings > System and test turning off Use graphics acceleration when available. It can help older or lower-end laptops, but it may make video playback less smooth, so switch it back on if performance gets worse.
Check whether the whole computer needs more RAM
If other apps are also using heavy memory, Chrome may not be the only issue. For comfortable everyday browsing, 8 GB is a practical minimum, while 16 GB gives much more headroom for many tabs and apps.
Fully quit Chrome when memory keeps climbing
If memory use grows over hours or days no matter what you close, quit Chrome completely and reopen it. This clears stuck processes that failed to release memory normally.
