Browser speed is not decided by one benchmark score. Chrome and Edge share the Blink engine, so their raw page rendering is usually very close. Firefox uses Gecko, which can behave differently and often aims for leaner memory use. What you feel day to day depends more on tabs, extensions, RAM, startup behavior, and website compatibility.

Where the real differences show up
These areas explain most everyday speed differences.
- Startup time: Edge includes Startup Boost, which keeps a small background process ready so Edge can open faster. Chrome and Firefox do not use the same built-in feature.
- Memory with many tabs: Chrome has Memory Saver, Edge has Sleeping Tabs, and Firefox tends to manage memory more conservatively by default.
- Raw JavaScript speed: Benchmark results change from release to release. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox trade small wins often enough that old benchmark screenshots become stale quickly.
- Extension overhead: Chrome has the biggest extension ecosystem, which also means many Chrome installations are slowed by too many add-ons. That is not the browser engine itself.
Why speed comparisons are hard
A browser running ten heavy tabs, five extensions, and a low-memory laptop will feel different from the same browser on a clean profile. Network speed, site design, ad load, background apps, and available RAM can outweigh engine differences. Benchmarks such as Speedometer and JetStream are useful for browser engineers, but they do not fully represent a messy real session.
More control
Compatibility can feel like speed
Many complex websites are tested first against Chromium because Chrome and Edge have large market share. That can make Chrome or Edge feel smoother on certain web apps, even when raw speed is not the reason.
Firefox may feel lighter with many tabs
Firefox can use less memory in some many-tab setups, especially with fewer extensions. If your computer is short on RAM, that may matter more than a small JavaScript benchmark difference.
The biggest speed fix is usually cleanup
Across all three browsers, trimming unused extensions and closing tabs you no longer need often improves performance more than switching browsers. Test a clean profile before blaming the browser itself.
