If Word will not open at all, the cause is often a stuck background process, a bad add-in, a corrupted default template, or damaged Office program files. Start with quick checks before reinstalling Office.

Try quick fixes first
These take less time than a full repair.
- Restart the computer to clear stuck Office processes.
- On Windows, open Task Manager and end Microsoft Word or WINWORD.EXE if it is running without a visible window.
- Start Word in safe mode by holding Ctrl while opening it on Windows.
- If safe mode works, disable recent or suspicious add-ins from Word options.
- Install pending Windows and Office updates, then restart.
If one of these fixes Word, there is no need to run a full repair unless the problem returns.
Repair Office on Windows
Repair resets Office program files without deleting your documents.
- Press Windows+R, type appwiz.cpl, and press Enter.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Click Change.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If Word still will not open, repeat and choose Online Repair.
- Restart and test Word again.

Rename Normal.dotm
If Word opens briefly and closes, the Normal template may be corrupted. Close Word, find Normal.dotm in the templates folder, rename it to Normal.old, and reopen Word.
Reinstall only after repair fails
If both repairs fail, uninstall Office fully and reinstall from the licensed Microsoft account. Microsoft removal tools can help when the normal uninstaller is stuck.
Fix one file, not Word
If Word opens but one document does not, use File > Open > Open and Repair on that file. The document may be damaged while Word itself is fine.
Prevent repeat corruption
Keep Office updates enabled and avoid force-closing Word during saves unless it is genuinely frozen.
