Word Not Responding? How to Fix It and Recover Your Document

When Word freezes, the first concern is unsaved work. Give it a short chance to recover, then use AutoRecover and Document Recovery before troubleshooting the reason it froze.

Does this affect you?

Use this for Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2021 or 2019 on Windows or Mac when Word shows Not Responding, turns gray, or stops accepting clicks.

Recover the document after a freeze

Do this before moving into deeper repairs.

  1. Wait 30 to 60 seconds without extra clicking; Word may finish a paste, save, or proofing pass.
  2. If it stays frozen, end Microsoft Word from Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on Mac.
  3. Reopen Word.
  4. Use the Document Recovery pane if it appears.
  5. Open each recovered version, choose the best one, and Save As immediately.
  6. If no pane appears, check Recent files and search for AutoRecover files such as .asd or .wbk on Windows, or the Word AutoRecovery folder on Mac.

Stop repeated Word freezes

Use this if freezing happens more than once.

  1. Start Word in safe mode to test add-ins.
  2. If safe mode works, disable add-ins one at a time and restart Word between tests.
  3. Run Office Quick Repair on Windows, then Online Repair if needed.
  4. Rename Normal.dotm so Word builds a fresh default template.
  5. Install Office updates.

More control

Repair one damaged document

If only one file freezes Word, use File > Open, select the file, open the arrow beside Open, and choose Open and Repair.

Shorten AutoRecover interval

Set Save AutoRecover information every to a shorter interval such as 5 minutes so less work is at risk next time.

Use AutoSave for cloud files

Documents saved to OneDrive or SharePoint can use AutoSave for continuous saving while you work.

Reduce heavy-document strain

Very large files with many images, tracked changes, or embedded objects can freeze more often. Compress images or split very large documents if needed.
