
MAC address filtering lets a router allow or block devices based on their hardware network address. It sounds like strong security, but in practice it is better as a device-management tool than as your main Wi-Fi protection.
Does this affect you?
Use this if your router has a setting called MAC Filtering, Access Control, Device Filtering, or Wireless MAC Filter. It can help control known devices, but it should sit behind a strong Wi-Fi password and WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.
Turn on MAC address filtering
Router menus vary, but the setup usually follows the same pattern.
- Find the MAC address for every device you want to keep connected. On Windows, run ipconfig /all. On Mac, open System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details. On iPhone, open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the information button. On Android, check About phone > Status or the Wi-Fi network details.
- Log into the router admin page or app.
- Open Access Control, MAC Filter, Device Filtering, or a similar menu under Wireless or Security.
- Choose Allow mode if only listed devices should connect, or Block/Deny mode if listed devices should be prevented while everything else remains allowed.
- Add each device MAC address and give it a recognizable name.
- Save the setting, then confirm your own phone, laptop, printer, and smart devices still connect.
Know the security limits
MAC filtering is easy to overestimate.
- A MAC address can be observed by someone monitoring Wi-Fi traffic.
- Many devices can spoof, or imitate, a different MAC address. A determined person can copy an allowed address.
- Filtering may stop casual or accidental access, but it is not a serious barrier by itself.
- A strong unique Wi-Fi password with WPA3, or WPA2 Personal AES if WPA3 is not available, does much more for real security.

Where MAC filtering is useful
It is handy for blocking a specific device without changing the Wi-Fi password for everyone, keeping an allow list of household devices, or controlling a child device after bedtime.
Allow mode adds maintenance
Every new phone, guest device, printer, smart plug, replacement laptop, or streaming box must be added before it can connect. That manual upkeep is why many homes turn filtering back off.
Private MAC addresses can confuse lists
Phones and laptops may use randomized private Wi-Fi addresses. If a device keeps appearing as new, check its Wi-Fi privacy setting for your network before assuming filtering is broken.
