eero Wi-Fi works without a subscription. eero Secure and eero Secure Plus are optional paid add-ons that layer extra security, filtering, and bundled services on top of the standard eero app.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the eero app is prompting for eero Secure, eero Plus, or eero Secure Plus and you want to know whether it is required. The short answer: your Wi-Fi network, router management, and basic app features work without paying.
What you get without a subscription
The core mesh system remains useful on the free tier.
- Set up and manage the eero network from the eero app.
- Change Wi-Fi name and password.
- Add and remove eero units.
- See connected devices.
- Create a guest network with its own password.
- Pause internet access for an individual device.
- Receive automatic firmware and security updates for the hardware.
- Use limited family profile features, though deeper filtering and scheduling require a subscription.
What eero Secure and Secure Plus add
The subscription features live in the eero app under subscription settings.
- eero Secure adds network-wide ad blocking, content filtering, advanced parental controls, profile schedules, and threat blocking for known malicious sites or domains.
- eero Secure Plus includes the Secure features and bundles additional services such as password management and malware protection, depending on Amazon/eero current offering.
- Pricing changes over time, so check the current amount inside the eero app rather than relying on old screenshots or old router articles.
- Canceling a subscription does not shut off your Wi-Fi. It removes only the paid filtering, threat, ad-blocking, and bundled-service features.
More control
Who should consider paying
The paid tier makes sense if you want router-level parental controls, content categories, schedules by profile, or ad blocking across many devices without installing separate tools.
Who can stay free
If you already use other parental controls, browser ad blockers, antivirus, or password manager tools, the free eero setup may be enough. The subscription is additive, not necessary for normal mesh Wi-Fi.
Check trials and billing
New eero purchases may include a trial that later renews. Open the eero app, check Settings > Subscription, and review billing or cancellation there. Amazon-billed subscriptions may also appear under Amazon account subscriptions.
