Too Many Devices on Your Wi-Fi Network? Here is the Fix

Many connected devices on home Wi-Fi

Every device on Wi-Fi shares airtime, bandwidth, and router resources. A network can technically accept many devices but still feel sluggish long before it reaches a hard limit.

Does this affect you?

Use this if your home Wi-Fi has grown to include phones, laptops, TVs, plugs, bulbs, cameras, speakers, and sensors, and performance has slowly worsened.

Quick fixes that help now

Start by finding what is actually connected.

  1. Open the router app or admin page and check Connected Devices.
  2. Identify devices you no longer use or do not recognize.
  3. Move low-priority smart devices to 2.4 GHz if your router uses separate bands.
  4. Keep phones, laptops, and streaming devices on faster 5 GHz when close enough.
  5. Power off old tablets, unused gadgets, or devices that no longer need network access.
  6. Restart the router to clear stale connections and refresh its internal tables.

Set up a separate smart-device network

This is a better long-term setup for lots of IoT devices.

  1. Open Wireless settings in the router.
  2. Create a guest network or secondary SSID for smart home devices.
  3. Give it a clear name and strong password.
  4. Move plugs, bulbs, cameras, and sensors through each device companion app.
  5. Leave trusted computers, phones, and main streaming devices on the primary network.

More control

Old routers struggle sooner

Older ISP routers may perform poorly with 20 or more active devices. A newer router or mesh system built for higher client counts may be the real fix.

Check DHCP pool size

If the DHCP range is small, devices may fail to connect instead of merely slowing down. Expand the pool under LAN settings if it is nearly full.

Use QoS for important devices

Quality of Service can prioritize video calls, gaming, or work devices over low-priority background traffic from gadgets.
