An Orbi system starts with the main router connected to the modem, then satellites that extend coverage. The order matters because satellites cannot join until the router itself is online.

Use this for Netgear Orbi mesh Wi-Fi systems with a router unit and one or more satellites set up through the Orbi app.
Set up the Orbi router first
Begin with the unit beside the modem.
- Place the Orbi router near the modem.
- Connect Ethernet from the modem to the yellow Internet port on the Orbi router.
- Plug in power and wait for the ring light to turn solid white, then pulse blue or show ready status for your model.
- Install the Orbi app or the Netgear app named for your model.
- Sign in or create a Netgear account.
- Tap Set up a new Orbi system.
- Follow prompts to create the Wi-Fi name and password.
- Wait for the app to confirm internet access.
Add and sync satellites
Add satellites after the router is online.
- For initial sync, plug the satellite into power in the same room as the router.
- Wait while the ring pulses white.
- Give it one to three minutes to settle. Blue means good connection, amber means weak connection, and magenta means it failed.
- Confirm the satellite appears in the Orbi app.
- Move the synced satellite halfway between the router and weak area.
- Plug it in and wait for the ring to settle to a good connection again.
- Add additional satellites one at a time.
More control
Wired backhaul improves large homes
If you can run Ethernet from the router to a satellite, Orbi can use that wired path for backhaul, improving speed and reliability.
Update firmware after setup
Open Settings > Firmware Update in the Orbi app once all units are synced. New units can ship with older firmware.
Move failed satellites closer
A satellite that will not sync is usually too far away for initial binding. Start close, sync, then move it to the final location.
