Netgear router lights give a quick status check before you log into anything. Exact meanings vary by model, but white or blue usually means normal, amber means partial trouble, and red needs attention.

Use this for Netgear home routers, including many Nighthawk models. Orbi mesh systems use ring lights with similar but separate meanings.
What common light colors mean
Check the Internet or WAN light when diagnosing service.
- Solid white or blue: router power or internet status is normal.
- Blinking white: startup, firmware update, syncing, or active process. Give it several minutes.
- Solid amber/orange: router is powered but internet is weak, unstable, or not fully established. The modem or ISP side may be involved.
- Solid red: no internet connection or a major connection problem.
- Wi-Fi light off: wireless broadcasting may be disabled by a button, setting, or reset.
Fix a solid red Internet light
Work from cables outward.
- Check the cable from modem or fiber ONT to the router Internet/WAN port. Reseat both ends.
- Restart modem and router in order: unplug both, wait 30 seconds, plug in the modem first, wait for stable lights, then plug in the router.
- Check the provider outage page or app.
- If no outage is reported and red remains, consider a factory reset to clear corrupted settings.
- To reset, hold the recessed Reset button for about 10 seconds until lights flash.
More control
Orbi ring lights are different
Orbi often uses white for startup/syncing, blue for a good satellite link, amber for weak satellite link, and magenta for an error or no backhaul/internet connection. Check the Orbi app when magenta appears.
You can dim LEDs
Many Netgear routers include LED Settings under Advanced > Administration so bedroom lights can be dimmed or disabled without affecting the network.
Normal lights do not prove every device is fine
Router LEDs show the router state. If lights look normal but one laptop cannot connect, check that device Wi-Fi, DHCP, or saved-network settings.
