The Netgear Nighthawk app handles first-time setup and everyday management for standalone Nighthawk routers. It covers Wi-Fi names, passwords, connected devices, guest Wi-Fi, speed tests, and monitoring without memorizing an IP address.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you have a Netgear Nighthawk router and want to set it up or manage it from iPhone or Android. Orbi mesh systems use the Orbi app instead.
Set up a new Nighthawk router
Use the app for the initial connection.
- Connect the router to the modem with Ethernet and plug in power.
- Wait about a minute for startup.
- Install the Nighthawk app.
- Connect the phone to the default NETGEAR Wi-Fi printed on the router label, or scan the QR code if offered.
- Follow the app setup wizard while it detects the internet connection.
- Create a new Wi-Fi name and password.
- Create or sign into a Netgear account for app and remote management.
- Reconnect household devices using the new Wi-Fi details.
Log into an existing router
Use this for routine settings and status checks.
- Open the Nighthawk app while connected to router Wi-Fi, or remotely if remote management is enabled.
- Sign in with the Netgear account if prompted.
- Use the home screen for connected devices, speed tests, guest Wi-Fi, and network status.
- Open Settings for Wi-Fi name/password, parental controls, and traffic monitoring.
- For advanced settings the app does not expose, use routerlogin.net in a browser with the admin credentials.
Reset if the app cannot find the router
Use this when setup fails badly or the router stops responding.
- Find the recessed Reset button on the router.
- Hold it with a paperclip for about 7 seconds until the Power light blinks.
- Wait for the router to restart.
- Open the Nighthawk app and start setup again.
More control
Some settings still require the browser
Static routes, certain VPN features, legacy options, and detailed firewall rules may only be available at routerlogin.net.
Remote management uses the Netgear account
Once linked, the app can restart the router or pause devices even when you are away from home, if the feature is enabled.
Nighthawk and Orbi apps are not interchangeable
Both are Netgear products, but standalone Nighthawk routers and Orbi mesh systems use different apps and management flows.
