Router-level parental controls apply rules at the Wi-Fi network instead of configuring every device separately. That makes them useful for home schedules, broad content filtering, and devices that do not have strong built-in controls.

Use this if you want internet schedules, age-based filters, or profile controls through a router app or admin page from Xfinity xFi, eero, Netgear, TP-Link, ASUS, or similar systems.
Set up built-in parental controls
Check the router app first because many modern routers manage family controls there.
- Open the router or ISP app, or log into the web admin page.
- Find Parental Controls, Family, Profiles, or People.
- Create a profile for each child or group of devices.
- Assign phones, tablets, consoles, TVs, and computers to the right profile.
- Choose a content filter level appropriate for the age.
- Set schedules for bedtime, homework, school nights, or weekends.
- Save. Most routers apply changes within a minute or two.
Use DNS filtering if the router lacks controls
DNS filtering works on almost any router, but it is less flexible.
- Log into the router admin page.
- Open DNS Settings under Internet or WAN Setup.
- Switch DNS from Automatic or ISP DNS to manual.
- Enter a family-safe DNS service such as OpenDNS FamilyShield.
- Save and restart the router so devices receive the new DNS.
- Remember this blocks categories network-wide and does not create per-child schedules.
More control
Cellular data can bypass router rules
Router controls apply only while the device is on your Wi-Fi. Phones can bypass them by switching to cellular data, so use Screen Time, Family Link, or carrier controls for phones used away from home.
Guest devices are filtered too
Friends devices connected to your Wi-Fi usually receive the same router-level filtering, which can be helpful as long as you expect it.
Layer controls for app-specific limits
Router tools are good for broad categories and schedules. Dedicated parental-control apps are better for social media limits, app timers, and controls outside the house.
