How to Set Up Mesh Wi-Fi in Your Home

Mesh Wi-Fi replaces one router with several nodes that work together as a single network. Devices can move through the house without you manually switching Wi-Fi names.

Use this for eero, Google Nest Wifi, Netgear Orbi, TP-Link Deco, ASUS ZenWiFi, and similar app-managed mesh systems when fixing weak Wi-Fi areas.

Set up the mesh system

The brand app changes, but the physical order is usually the same.

  1. Connect the main node directly to the modem with Ethernet. This node becomes the router.
  2. Plug the main node into power and install the manufacturer app.
  3. Create or sign into the required account.
  4. Follow the app prompts to detect the main node, name the Wi-Fi network, and set the password.
  5. Add satellite nodes one at a time from the app.
  6. Plug each satellite into power, wait for its ready light, and confirm it in the app.
  7. Name each node by room so the app can show useful status later.
  8. Disable the old router Wi-Fi or put the old gateway into bridge/modem-only mode if required.

Place nodes for full coverage

Mesh performance depends heavily on where the nodes sit.

  1. Keep the main node near the modem.
  2. Place additional nodes in a chain toward weak areas instead of clustering them together.
  3. Put a node where it still receives one or two bars from the previous node, not where signal disappears.
  4. Avoid cabinets, floors, corners, large appliances, mirrors, and metal objects.
  5. Use the mesh app signal-quality view to confirm each node has a strong link.

More control

Good placement beats extra nodes

A well-placed two-node system can outperform a poorly placed three-node system. Add nodes only for measured weak rooms.

Use wired backhaul when possible

Ethernet between mesh nodes frees wireless capacity for your devices and improves speed in large homes.

Band steering is normal

Most mesh systems use one Wi-Fi name and steer devices between 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and sometimes 6 GHz. Split bands only when a specific older smart device needs it.

Do not leave the old Wi-Fi competing

Two active Wi-Fi networks from an old router and new mesh can cause devices to connect to the wrong one and make the mesh look worse than it is.
