ASUS AiMesh lets compatible ASUS routers work together as one mesh network. One router connects to the modem as the main router, and the others become nodes that extend the same Wi-Fi name and password.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you have two or more AiMesh-compatible ASUS routers. Most ASUS routers released since 2018 support AiMesh, but it is worth checking the model compatibility list.
Set up AiMesh
Start with the router that will sit next to the modem.
- Choose the main router. If the models differ, use the newer or stronger router as the main unit.
- Set up the main router normally through the ASUS Router app or router.asus.com, including the final Wi-Fi name and password.
- Factory reset the router that will become a node by holding its reset button for about 10 seconds until lights flash.
- Place the node between the main router and weak coverage area, close enough to still receive a decent signal.
- Open AiMesh from the ASUS app or main router admin page.
- Tap Search, then Add or Bind when the node appears.
- Wait a few minutes while the main router pushes settings to the node.
- Repeat for additional routers.
Fix a node that will not join
Binding problems are usually signal, compatibility, firmware, or old settings.
- Move the node closer to the main router for initial setup. You can move it afterward.
- Temporarily connect the node to the main router with Ethernet if wireless binding fails.
- Confirm both models support AiMesh.
- Update firmware on both routers under Administration > Firmware Upgrade.
- Factory reset the node again and retry if it was partially configured before.
More control
Place nodes where signal still exists
A node belongs where it still gets one or two bars from the router or previous node, not at the far edge where signal is gone.
Use Ethernet backhaul if you can
AiMesh can use Ethernet between router and node automatically, improving speed for devices connected through that node.
AiMesh Labs can improve roaming
Smart Connect merges bands under one name, and Roaming Assistant nudges devices away from weak distant nodes. Try these if devices cling to the wrong unit.
Manage nodes from the main router
After binding, network names, node status, adding, and removing nodes all happen from the main router AiMesh page.
