An iPhone can use a VPN through a provider app or through a manual profile from work or school. Both create a VPN connection you can turn on and off, but the setup path is different.

Use this for iPhones running recent iOS versions when you want privacy VPN service, travel access, streaming-region tools, or a workplace/school VPN profile.
Set up a VPN with an app
This is the usual method for personal VPN services.
- Install your VPN provider app from the App Store.
- Sign in with the account for that VPN service.
- Tap Connect in the app.
- When iOS asks to Add VPN Configurations, tap Allow.
- Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode.
- Look for the small VPN label near the top of the screen when connected.
- To turn it off, use Disconnect in the app or toggle VPN off in Settings.
Add a manual VPN configuration
Use this only when IT or a provider gave you exact connection details.
- Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management > VPN.
- Tap Add VPN Configuration.
- Choose the type provided to you, such as IKEv2, IPSec, or L2TP.
- Enter Description, Server, Remote ID, and authentication details exactly as given.
- Tap Done.
- Return to Settings > VPN and turn the connection on.
More control
Use Control Center for quick access
After a VPN exists, you can add a VPN control under Settings > Control Center for faster toggling if it is not already visible.
Connect On Demand can keep it active
Some manual profiles include Connect On Demand, and many apps offer Always On or Auto-connect. These reconnect the VPN after network changes.
Only one VPN runs at a time
If you have a work VPN and a personal VPN app, disconnect one before using the other. iPhone cannot run two active VPN tunnels together.
VPN uses your existing connection
A VPN does not replace Wi-Fi or cellular data. If internet stops right after connecting, suspect the VPN server, profile, or app first.
