
A VLAN splits one physical network into separate logical networks. It lets smart devices, guests, or work equipment reach the internet without seeing your main computers, phones, NAS, and files.
Does this affect you?
Use this if your router supports VLANs and you want more control than a basic guest network. VLAN support is common on higher-end consumer routers, Ubiquiti, TP-Link Omada, some ASUS and Netgear models, and business-grade gear.
Set up a VLAN on a supported router
Brand menus differ, but the structure is consistent.
- Log into the router admin page.
- Find VLAN, LAN > VLAN, or Advanced Networking > VLAN.
- Create a new VLAN with an unused ID such as 20 or 30.
- Assign it a separate private IP range, such as 192.168.20.1 if the main network uses 192.168.1.1.
- Assign the VLAN to a separate Wi-Fi name or specific Ethernet ports. A separate SSID is usually easiest for wireless smart devices.
- Open firewall or inter-VLAN routing settings and block traffic between the new VLAN and the main network while still allowing internet access.
- Save and connect a test device to the VLAN.
- Confirm the device gets an IP in the new range and can reach the internet.
- From the main network, try to ping or access the VLAN device. Isolation is working if it fails.
Move smart home devices gradually
Move a few devices first so broken local integrations are easier to spot.
- Start with low-trust devices such as plugs, bulbs, or budget cameras.
- Remove the device from the main Wi-Fi in its companion app.
- Set it up again while your phone is connected to the VLAN Wi-Fi name.
- Confirm the device still works from its app and required hub.
- Repeat one device group at a time.
- Add a narrow firewall rule only when a trusted hub must reach a specific device across VLANs.
More control
Guest Wi-Fi may be enough
A guest network is simpler and usually isolates visitors from your main network. VLANs are more flexible when you need several isolated groups or specific rules.
IoT devices are good VLAN candidates
Cheap smart devices often get fewer security updates. Isolation limits what they can reach if one is compromised.
Mesh VLAN support varies
Some mesh systems do not pass VLAN tags through all nodes or features. Check your exact model and firmware before designing around VLANs.
Test instead of trusting the checkbox
After setup, actually attempt cross-network access. VLAN security depends on the firewall rules doing what you intended.
