A Netgear factory reset returns the router to its out-of-box settings. It erases custom Wi-Fi names, passwords, access rules, and configuration changes, so use it when a restart is not enough or when you are locked out.
Does this affect you?
Use this for standalone Netgear routers, including many Nighthawk models, when troubleshooting serious problems, forgotten admin credentials, or preparing the router for someone else.
Reset with the physical button
This works even if you cannot log into the router.
- Find the recessed Reset button on the back or bottom of the router.
- With the router powered on, press and hold Reset with a paperclip or SIM tool for about 7 seconds until the Power light blinks.
- Release the button and wait for the router to restart. This usually takes 1 to 2 minutes.
- When the Power light is solid or showing the ready pattern for your model, the reset is complete.
- Connect to the default Wi-Fi name printed on the router label.
Reset from the web interface
Use this if you can still sign in and prefer a software reset.
- Connect to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1 in a browser.
- Log in with the admin username and password.
- Go to Advanced > Administration > Backup Settings, Factory Default, or the nearest matching menu.
- Click Erase or Restore Factory Settings and confirm.
- Wait for the reboot, then reconnect using the default label credentials.
More control
Change defaults right away
After reset, go back to routerlogin.net and change the admin password. Leaving admin/password defaults in place is risky on any network other people can reach.
Set a new Wi-Fi name and password
Open Wireless Settings and replace the default network details. Every home device will need to reconnect using the new password.
Restore a backup if you made one
If you saved a configuration file before the reset, upload it from Advanced > Administration > Backup Settings to restore old settings faster.
