Going offline on purpose can mean silencing one phone, pausing a child device, saving mobile data, or cutting the whole house for a while. The right method depends on how wide you want the pause to be.
Does this affect you?
Use this if you want to disconnect yourself, a device you manage from the router, or the entire home network. This is for intentional disconnecting, not troubleshooting an outage.
Disconnect your own device
This is the fastest option when you control the device directly.
- iPhone or Android: turn on Airplane Mode. If you still need Bluetooth for headphones, turn Bluetooth back on afterward while Wi-Fi and cellular remain off.
- Windows: click the network icon and turn off Wi-Fi, or use Airplane mode to shut wireless radios down together.
- Mac: click the Wi-Fi icon and turn Wi-Fi off, or use System Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Wired device: unplug the Ethernet cable.
Disconnect a specific device from the router
Use this when you do not have the device in your hand.
- Log into your router admin page or router app.
- Open Connected Devices, Attached Devices, Clients, or Device Manager.
- Find the target device by name, manufacturer, or MAC address.
- Choose Block, Pause, or Disconnect.
- If this should happen regularly, create a schedule or parental-control rule instead of a one-time block.
Disconnect the whole household
This is the blunt option because every device goes offline.
- Unplug the router from power. If you use a separate modem, unplug that too if needed.
- Leave it off until you want service restored.
- Plug the modem back in first, then the router, and wait about a minute or two for everything to reconnect.
- For regular whole-home pauses, check the app for Pause Internet, Family Time, or a similar household schedule.
More control
Limit apps instead of all internet
For distractions from one app, Screen Time on iPhone and Digital Wellbeing on Android can restrict apps while calls and messages keep working.
Airplane Mode may not stop Ethernet
Some laptops can remain online through a plugged-in Ethernet adapter even when Airplane Mode is on. Unplug the cable too if you need full isolation.
Make router blocks persistent
If a paused device reconnects after a router restart, the block was probably temporary. Save it as a rule or schedule.
Emergency calls are separate
Turning off Wi-Fi or data does not remove a phone ability to place emergency calls where cellular service is available.
