Cannot Connect to a Wi-Fi Network? How to Fix It

Phone unable to connect to Wi-Fi network

A Wi-Fi join failure can be a wrong saved password, a corrupted network profile, weak signal, hidden SSID, incompatible security mode, or a router rule blocking one device. Work through the symptom you see.

Does this affect you?

Use this when Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, or a smart device asks for the Wi-Fi password repeatedly, spins forever, drops immediately, or cannot see the network.

Fix repeated password prompts

Start here if the password keeps being rejected.

  1. Check capitalization and confusing characters such as O versus 0 or l versus 1.
  2. Forget the network on the device instead of only retyping the password.
  3. Reconnect from scratch and use Show password if available.
  4. Restart the router for 30 seconds if the same correct password still fails.

Force a fresh connection when joining times out

Use this if the password is accepted but connection never completes.

  1. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, or toggle Airplane Mode for 10 seconds on a phone.
  2. Restart the device.
  3. Move closer to the router for setup.
  4. On Windows, run the Network & Internet troubleshooter from Settings.

If the network does not appear

Missing networks are often band, range, or hidden-network problems.

  1. Look for separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names; older devices may see only 2.4 GHz.
  2. If the network is hidden, add it manually with the exact SSID and password.
  3. Move closer to the router.
  4. Restart the router if it has stopped broadcasting the SSID.

More control

Check blocked-device lists

If only one device fails, router MAC filtering, access control, or parental controls may be blocking it.

Routers can run out of leases

Crowded networks with many old devices can run out of DHCP addresses. Restarting the router often clears expired leases.

Older devices may need WPA2 mixed mode

WPA3-only networks can stop older phones, laptops, and smart devices from joining. Use WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode when needed.
