Real differences between Cat5e and Cat6
The difference matters most at higher speeds and longer runs.
- Cat5e: reliably supports up to 1 Gbps and is enough for most home internet plans under or around gigabit.
- Cat6: supports 1 Gbps easily and can support 10 Gbps on shorter runs, roughly up to 55 meters depending on conditions.
- Interference: Cat6 uses tighter twisting and may handle electrical noise better, especially in longer or bundled runs.
- Flexibility: Cat6 is often thicker and stiffer, which can matter in tight spaces.
- Price: Cat6 usually costs more, but the gap is often small for normal home lengths.
Which should you buy
For a short cable to a console, desktop, or TV and an internet plan under 1 Gbps, Cat5e is fine. For permanent in-wall wiring, multi-gig internet, a NAS, or future-proofing, Cat6 is the safer pick.
More control
Cat6a and higher are usually overkill
Cat6a, Cat7, and Cat8 target longer 10 Gbps or business/data-center needs. Most homes do not need them.
A bad cable matters more than category
Slow or dropping wired connections are often caused by damaged cables, ports, adapters, routers, or the plan itself, not Cat5e versus Cat6.
