Best Router Settings for Gaming

Router gaming settings for low latency

Online gaming needs a steady connection more than an impressive speed-test number. A modest connection with stable ping feels better than a fast connection that spikes, drops, or changes routes mid-match.

Does this affect you?

Use this if a PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch has lag spikes, disconnects, strict NAT, or unstable multiplayer performance on a home router.

Router settings that actually help

Start with the highest-impact changes.

  1. Use Ethernet whenever possible. Wired connections remove much of the jitter that Wi-Fi introduces.
  2. Enable Quality of Service or QoS in the router and prioritize the gaming device.
  3. Check NAT type on the console. If it is Moderate or Strict, enable UPnP or manually forward the ports required by that console or game.
  4. Create a DHCP reservation for the gaming device so port-forwarding rules keep pointing to the same local IP address.
  5. Turn off general-purpose VPNs while gaming unless you intentionally use a gaming-optimized VPN.
  6. Update router firmware, especially if stability has changed recently.

More control

Speed is not the main gaming metric

Once download speed is roughly above 15 to 25 Mbps, ping and jitter matter more than extra Mbps for most games.

Gaming mode is usually QoS

A one-click gaming mode can help, but it is normally QoS with device prioritization. A standard router with good QoS can do the same job.

Band steering can cause hiccups

If Wi-Fi devices switch between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz mid-game, connect the gaming device directly to the 5 GHz network or give that band its own name.

Watch for double NAT

If you use an ISP gateway plus your own router, port forwarding may break unless the gateway is in bridge mode or only one device handles NAT.
