
Router placement can change Wi-Fi performance as much as router model. Distance, walls, floors, metal, appliances, cabinets, and interference all weaken the signal before it reaches your devices.

Use this if Wi-Fi is strong in one room and weak in another, or if you are deciding whether moving the router can help before buying extenders or mesh.
Move the router to a better spot
This costs nothing and is worth testing first.
- Place the router as close to the center of the home as the modem or cable allows.
- Put it higher, such as on a shelf, instead of on the floor.
- Keep it in the open, not inside a cabinet, closet, or behind a TV.
- Move it away from thick walls, mirrors, filing cabinets, refrigerators, and other large metal objects.
- Keep distance from microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones that can interfere with 2.4 GHz.
- Retest the weak room after moving the router.
Adjust antennas and settings
Use this if the router has external antennas or a crowded wireless environment.
- Angle external antennas in different directions, with some vertical and some horizontal if the design allows.
- Log into the router and check the wireless channel setting.
- In crowded areas, try fixed 2.4 GHz channels 1, 6, or 11 instead of Auto.
- Keep 5 GHz enabled for close high-speed devices and 2.4 GHz enabled for longer-range devices.
- Save settings, let the router restart if needed, and retest.
More control
One router has limits
Homes over about 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, multiple floors, brick, concrete, or old plaster may need more than one access point.
Extender vs mesh
An extender repeats signal and may reduce speed or create a second network name. A mesh system uses matched nodes and one network name, usually working better for whole-home coverage.
Map the weak spots
Walk room by room with your phone Wi-Fi signal or a speed test so you know where coverage drops before placing mesh nodes.
