
A missing 5 GHz network does not always mean the router is broken. It may be combined with the 2.4 GHz name, unsupported by the device, out of range, disabled in router settings, or temporarily moved because of channel rules.

Use this if a phone, laptop, or tablet sees the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network but not the 5 GHz network you expected to find.
Check whether 5 GHz is separate or combined
Many modern routers intentionally hide both bands under one Wi-Fi name.
- Log into the router app or admin page, often at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
- Open Wireless settings.
- Look for Smart Connect, Band Steering, or Combine 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- If enabled, the missing 5 GHz name may be normal because the router chooses the band automatically.
- If you want separate names, disable the combined setting and confirm the 5 GHz radio is enabled.
Check device support and distance
If the router is broadcasting 5 GHz, the device or signal range may be the reason.
- Confirm the device supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi; many older or budget devices and smart home gadgets only support 2.4 GHz.
- Move closer to the router and rescan because 5 GHz has shorter range.
- Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or restart the device.
- Restart the router in case the 5 GHz radio stopped broadcasting.

Avoid DFS channel surprises
Some 5 GHz channels share space with radar systems. If your router uses DFS channels, it may temporarily stop or move the 5 GHz network. Try channels 36, 40, 44, or 48 for a non-DFS test.
Use a Wi-Fi analyzer in crowded buildings
Apartments can still have busy 5 GHz channels. A Wi-Fi analyzer can help you pick a quieter channel.
Update router firmware
A router firmware bug can affect one band while the other keeps working. Check the router app or admin page for updates.
