
Many routers broadcast more than one Wi-Fi band. You may see one normal network name and another ending in 5G, or your router may hide both bands behind one shared name. The right choice depends on distance, speed, and device support.

Use this if your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, or if you want to know why one device is faster close to the router while another connects better across the house.
What the bands mean
2.4 GHz and 5 GHz are radio frequency bands. Neither is automatically best for every device.
- 2.4 GHz: reaches farther, passes through walls better, and works with many smart home devices, but it is slower and more crowded.
- 5 GHz: is faster at close range and usually less crowded, but it weakens faster through distance, walls, and floors.
- Band steering: many newer routers use one Wi-Fi name and automatically move devices between bands.
- 6 GHz: Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 routers may add an even faster, cleaner band with shorter range and newer-device requirements.
See or change which band a device uses
If your router separates the bands, you can choose manually.
- Look for separate network names such as HomeWiFi and HomeWiFi-5G.
- To force 5 GHz, forget the 2.4 GHz network on that device and connect to the 5G name.
- If there is only one network name, log into the router and look for Smart Connect or Band Steering.
- Leave band steering on for convenience unless you need to troubleshoot or force a device onto one band.
More control
Use 2.4 GHz for distance and simple devices
Garages, basements, outdoor cameras, smart plugs, and sensors often do better on 2.4 GHz because they need range more than speed.
Use 5 GHz for close fast devices
Gaming, 4K streaming, video calls, and large downloads usually benefit from 5 GHz when the device is within a room or two of the router.
