Toner should be melted and pressed into the paper by the fuser. If toner rubs off, smears, or streaks in the same place, the fusing step or paper path needs attention.

Use this for laser and LED printers with toner smears. Inkjet wet-ink smudging has different causes.
Safety first
The fuser gets very hot. Let the printer cool for several minutes before opening areas near the rear or paper exit path, and never touch the fuser roller directly.
Fix the paper type setting
This is the most common toner-smearing cause.
- Open print settings or printer driver preferences.
- Find Paper Type or Media Type.
- Match it to the loaded paper, such as Plain, Heavyweight, Cardstock, or Labels.
- If smearing continues on thick paper, try the next heavier setting recommended by the paper package.
- Print a test page.
Run cleaning and check toner
Use this if settings were already correct.
- Run Cleaning Page or Fuser Cleaning from the printer menu or utility.
- Remove the toner cartridge and reseat it evenly.
- If the printer was stored cold, let it warm at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes.
- Print a test page.
More control
Same-location smears can mean a damaged roller
A streak in the identical place on every page often points to a worn or damaged fuser roller rather than settings.
Fusers may be replaceable
High-volume laser printers often have a rated fuser unit. Some are user-replaceable; others need service.
Check toner quality
Off-brand or refilled toner may not fuse correctly at the printer calibrated heat. Test with genuine toner if smearing started after a cartridge change.
