Printer ghosting is a faint repeated copy of text or graphics appearing farther down the page at a consistent distance. It is mainly a laser-printer issue, usually tied to the drum, toner transfer, or fuser path.
Does this affect you?
Use this if a mono or color laser printer creates a light duplicate image. Inkjet smears and wet-looking streaks are different problems.
Check and replace the drum unit
A worn drum is the most common cause of true ghosting.
- Open the toner and drum access area.
- Check whether the printer reports Drum Life, Replace Drum Soon, or a similar status.
- Find out whether your model uses a separate drum or an all-in-one toner/drum cartridge.
- Replace the drum with the exact part for your model if it is near or past rated life.
- Reinstall toner, close the printer, and print a test page.
Rule out toner and paper before buying a drum
These checks are worth trying first if the drum is not obviously due.
- Remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it side to side, then reseat it.
- Make sure the paper type in the driver matches the loaded paper.
- Run the printer cleaning page or calibration function.
- Print a test page and compare whether the repeated mark changed.
More control
Regular spacing points to the drum
The drum rotates at a fixed size, so a repeating faint image at the same interval is a strong clue that the drum is not fully clearing its previous charge.
Smearing points elsewhere
If toner rubs off or drags across the page, suspect fuser problems rather than drum ghosting.
Temperature and humidity can matter
Very cold, hot, or humid rooms can make borderline drum and toner behavior more obvious. Let the printer stabilize at room temperature before major repairs.
If a new drum does not fix it
A correctly installed new drum that does not help can point to the fuser assembly or high-voltage system, which is usually a repair-service issue.
