Identify the code category, then look it up
Write down the code exactly before restarting or clearing messages.
- Record every letter and number. Canon often uses four-digit Support Codes, Epson may show codes like 0x97, HP may show Error plus a number, and Brother may combine names with short codes.
- Decide whether it looks paper-related, ink/toner-related, connectivity-related, or a hardware/system error.
- Restart the printer once to clear temporary sensor or communication states.
- Search the official support site for the exact brand, model, and code.
- If the same code returns immediately, follow model-specific instructions instead of repeating generic resets.
Common categories
Use these clues while checking the official code list.
- Paper-related: jam, misfeed, paper size mismatch, tray problem, or sensor blocked by a scrap.
- Ink or toner-related: cartridge not recognized, low supply, ink system failure, toner or drum message.
- Connectivity-related: offline, communication error, USB, Wi-Fi, or driver problem.
- Hardware fault: printhead, fuser, scanner carriage, waste ink pad, or internal counter/service message.

If paper is clear, supplies are reseated, and the code returns after a restart, the printer is detecting something persistent.
