Canon Support Code 5100 usually means the printhead carriage cannot move freely. Support Code 5011 is closely related but points more toward the scanner carriage. In both cases, the printer is detecting a mechanical movement problem, not a normal driver issue.
Does this affect you?
Use this guide if a Canon PIXMA or similar printer stops with 5100 or 5011, especially after a paper jam, setup, move, or packaging removal.
Clear the carriage obstruction
Most 5100 and 5011 errors are caused by paper scraps, packing tape, foreign objects, or a carriage path blockage.
- Turn the printer off, then open the top, scanner, or ink access cover for your model.
- Inspect the full width of the carriage rail for torn paper, labels, plastic, tape, clips, or debris.
- Remove anything you find gently, pulling paper in the normal feed direction when possible.
- If the printhead carriage is accessible, slide it gently to confirm it moves freely across the rail. Do not force it.
- Close the cover, wait 60 seconds, turn the printer back on, and let the self-test run.
If the error remains
Try a deeper reset and inspection before assuming the printer needs replacement.
- Turn the printer off, unplug it from the wall, and wait two full minutes.
- Check the far right and left areas of the carriage path, including ink absorber pad areas and under the carriage, for dried ink, paper dust, or obstruction.
- Plug the printer in and watch startup. The carriage should move smoothly; repeated stopping at the same point suggests a belt, motor, or sensor issue.
- If two careful inspections find nothing and the code returns immediately, contact Canon Support with the model number and code.
More control
It is rarely software
These support codes are triggered by printer sensors detecting resistance or failed movement. Reinstalling drivers does not clear a blocked carriage.
Check again after paper jams
A tiny torn scrap from a previous jam is a common cause. Recheck the ends of the rail even if the original sheet looked complete.
Older printers can have worn belts
If the carriage moves unevenly or stiffly with no debris present, a worn belt or motor may be involved. Compare repair cost with replacement before paying for service.
