
You press the power button and nothing happens: no fans, no lights, no click, and no startup. This applies to desktop PCs with a front-panel power switch and laptops with built-in power buttons.
Does This Affect You?
A broken power button looks exactly like no power reaching the device. Before blaming the switch, confirm the outlet, cable, charger, PSU switch, and battery path are working.
Confirm Power Is Reaching the PC
Rule out power supply first.
- For desktops, make sure the PSU rear switch is set to 1 or on.
- Try another wall outlet and a known-good power cable.
- For laptops, try another compatible charger if available and watch for the charging light.
- On desktops, listen or look for any PSU activity when connected to wall power.
- For laptops with removable batteries, test charger-only and battery-only if the model supports it.
Before opening a desktop or laptop, unplug it and ground yourself. Never test bare wires while the system is plugged in except for the brief controlled desktop front-panel pin test described below, keeping hands clear of fans and other components. These steps are at your own risk.
Test and Bypass the Power Switch on Desktop PCs
This separates a bad case button from a bad motherboard or PSU.
- With the PC unplugged, open the side panel and find the front-panel header on the motherboard. The two-pin connector is usually labeled PWR SW or POWER SW.
- Note where the connector sits, then reconnect wall power.
- Using an insulated-handle screwdriver, briefly touch the metal tip across the two power-switch pins only.
- If the PC starts, the case power button, front-panel cable, or connector is the problem.
- If it does not start, unplug again and suspect PSU, motherboard, or another internal connection.
Follow the front-panel cable from the case button to the motherboard and reseat it. A damaged front-panel I/O cable or button assembly is often inexpensive to replace from the case maker. Some users keep a small external switch or jumper on the PWR SW pins as a low-cost workaround.
Laptop power buttons are usually part of the keyboard, palm rest, or a small board connected by a delicate ribbon cable. Bypassing them is not practical without model-specific service instructions. If charger and battery checks pass, a failed laptop power button is a repair-shop job.
