Your desktop fans spin and lights come on, but the monitor stays black. You may even hear Windows start. This applies to desktops with dedicated graphics cards or integrated motherboard/CPU graphics.
Does This Affect You?
A running PC with no display usually comes down to the monitor cable being in the wrong port, a bad cable or input, a graphics card that moved, or RAM that is not fully seated.
Check the Cable and the Port It Is Plugged Into
This is the most common fix on desktops with dedicated GPUs.
- If you have a graphics card, plug the monitor into the card ports lower on the back of the case, not the motherboard video ports.
- Try another cable and another GPU port, such as HDMI instead of DisplayPort.
- Set the monitor to the matching input source.
- Test the monitor with another device if possible.
Disconnect Non-Essential Hardware
Reduce the PC to what it needs for POST.
- Unplug USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
- Disconnect extra internal drives and add-in cards other than the GPU.
- Try booting with motherboard, CPU, one RAM stick, GPU if needed, and the Windows drive.
- If video returns, reconnect one device at a time to find the offender.
Reseat the Graphics Card and Memory
Unplug the PC and ground yourself before opening the case. Handle cards and RAM by their edges only. These steps are at your own risk.
- Open the side panel.
- Release the GPU PCIe latch, lift the card out, then reseat it until the latch clicks and power connectors are fully inserted.
- Remove and reinstall RAM until the side clips snap shut. Test one stick at a time if needed.
- If the motherboard and CPU support integrated graphics, test motherboard video with the graphics card removed.
- Close the case and test for display.
Check motherboard debug LEDs labeled CPU, DRAM, VGA, and BOOT if present; the stuck light points to the POST stage that failed. Clearing CMOS can also help after a bad BIOS setting or overclock, but it resets custom BIOS settings. If no step works, test with known-good RAM or GPU before replacing parts.
